What is Reiki?
Reiki (pronounced ray-key) is a gentle yet powerful form of energy healing that originated in Japan in the early 20th century. The word Reiki comes from the Japanese words Rei (universal) and Ki (life energy). It’s a practice that helps to restore balance to the body, mind, and spirit by supporting your natural ability to heal.
Usui Reiki, the original form developed by Dr Mikao Usui, is often seen as a modern rediscovery of an ancient healing art. While Reiki as we know it today was founded in Japan, its roots trace back to ancient healing practices believed to have originated in India and Tibet thousands of years ago. Dr Usui studied sacred texts and spiritual traditions from across cultures, seeking a method of healing that could be accessible to anyone, regardless of background or belief.
Through deep meditation and spiritual practice on Mount Kurama in Japan, he experienced a powerful awakening that reconnected him with the knowledge and energy of Reiki. From this experience, the Usui system of Reiki healing was born.

Why Reiki with Me
Reiki works by channelling universal life force energy into the body and energy field around the body (aura). It helps clear blockages and activate the parasympathetic nervous system to promote deep relaxation. Reiki supports healing on all levels: physical, emotional, mental and spiritual. For me, Reiki is not just a healing modality. It is an entire way of life. I have been asked many times why I chose to be a Reiki practitioner and my answer is often surprising to people. I didn’t choose Reiki, it chose me.
Reiki first came into my conscious awareness in 2015 when I met a Reiki Master who became a good friend. I began to see Reiki all over the place, and I knew I was being guided towards it but I didn’t have the means of paying for the training. My friend offered to attune me to Reiki but the timing was never right. After finishing my MRes in Health Research in 2023, I began to research the various different types Reiki, most of which didn’t resonate with me. The more complicated the style, the more off-put I was. I finally discovered Reiki Evolution and Taggart King who offered training as close to Mikao Usui’s original system as I could find and I knew I had found what I had been looking for.
Attunement by Spirit
The night that I booked my Reiki 1 course, I had a lucid dream, well 3 actually. Two of my spirit guides began working over my chakras, attuning my energy centres to Reiki. They attuned my Root and Sacral chakras and then I woke up. I got back to sleep and the dream continued with my Solar Plexus and Heart chakras being attuned, they appeared to be drawing shapes, symbols and codes over them to activate them. I woke up again and went to the loo before trying to get back to sleep. When I did, the dream started again for the third time and they attuned my throat, third eye and crown chakras in a similar fashion. Since then, my hands get really hot with healing Reiki energy moving through them.
Since receiving the level 1 training materials in July 2024, I have worked with Reiki energy on a daily basis. I carry out Hatsurei ho and meditate with different aspects of the energy every day. This has enabled me to get to know Reiki energy intimately and means that I can clearly channel the energy, trusting and knowing intuitively how and where the energy is most needed. As a professional practitioner, this is extremely important to me. I continue to dedicate time daily to work with the energy for my own spiritual development as well as my professional development to ensure my clients receive the best experience possible.
What To Expect in a Reiki Session
Your first Reiki treatment with me includes a free consultation where we get to know each other better. We’ll discuss any issues you’re experiencing, your reasons for wanting the treatment and what you want to gain from the experience, and cover a brief medical and lifestyle history, to help me get a holistic picture of you so that I can tailor the session to your needs. I’ll also explain how I work and what you might expect. You’ll then receive a full treatment.
In subsequent sessions, we’ll start with a quick chat about how things have been going for you and what you hope to gain from this treatment. You’ll then be invited to lie down, fully clothed, in a comfortable and quiet space. If you are attending in person, you’ll be welcomed into my peaceful healing room in Stewarton, Ayrshire. If we’re working remotely, you’ll receive your session in the comfort of your own home via Zoom. One-to-one distant Reiki is just as effective as in-person.
Working with the Energy
Each session I offer is intuitively guided and tailored to your unique energy and needs. I don’t follow a set routine. Instead, I practise the traditional Japanese technique called Reiji ho, which allows me to connect deeply with your energy and be guided to where the healing is most needed. Each session lasts 1 hour.
During the treatment, I place my hands gently on or just above your body, working with your energy field, the energy centres (chakras) and areas that call for attention. You may feel warmth, tingling, gentle waves of energy, or simply a deep sense of relaxation. You might also experience a physical or emotional release. Some people receive insights or visuals, others simply drift into a restful state.
There’s no right or wrong way to experience Reiki. Your body and soul know exactly what to do with the energy.
How Can Reiki Help?
Reiki can benefit anyone, wherever they are on their path. It works on a subtle energetic level to support your whole being. Scientific research has shown that Reiki is effective for managing pain and anxiety 1. I recommend a course of 3 or 4 sessions for deep-seated issues but you will benefit from only one session. One session improved pain, drowsiness, tiredness, nausea, appetite, shortness of breath, anxiety, depression, and overall well-being in study participants 2.
People are often drawn to Reiki when they feel anxious, exhausted, stuck, are navigating ill health or simply needing space to breathe and reconnect. After a session, many clients report feeling calmer, lighter, and more balanced. Some also experience a gentle emotional release. Some people find the treatment so beneficial they attend regular sessions to keep them balanced and centred.
There are no contraindications for Reiki. It is safe, non-invasive, and suitable for everyone, including children, the elderly, and those undergoing medical treatment. It can also be a wonderful complement to other healing modalities or conventional medicine.
